Mario Miranda cut from UFC after loss to Aaron Simpson at UFC Fight Night 24

The UFC has cut another fighter following UFC Fight Night 24, as MMAWeekly.com reports that middleweight Mario Miranda is out of the organization after his loss to Aaron Simpson.

The loss was Miranda’s third in four appearances in the UFC. After suffering his first career loss to Gerald Harris by TKO in his UFC debut last March, Miranda picked up his 12th career win with a dominant TKO win over former UFC Middleweight Title challenger David Loiseau.

However, Miranda then dropped back to back decisions to Demian Maia and Simpson, leading to this release. He joins Ultimate Fighter 11 runner-up Kris McCray as fighters cut following the March 26 event in Seattle.

Penick’s Analysis: This is another one that isn’t entirely surprising. It was only his second straight loss, and they were both by decision, but they weren’t the most exciting fights and when he was only 1-3 this was a likely result. Like a lot of fighters that get cut, he’ll have a chance to get back with a few wins outside of the organization, but this is not all that surprising.

Gegard Mousasi, Keith Jardine Draw in Bloody Strikeforce Fight
by Michael David SmithAs almost everyone expected, Gegard Mousasi bloodied and battered Keith Jardine on Saturday night’s Strikeforce card. But as almost no one expected, Jardine showed a tremendous amount of toughness, Mousasi had a point deducted for an illegal kick, and the result was a majority draw.

It was a mess of a fight, with Jardine’s face becoming a bloody mess and the referee calling a halt to the action three separate times: Once for an illegal kick, once for a low blow and once because Mousasi’s mouthpiece fell out. One judge scored the fight 29-27 for Mousasi, but two judges scored it a 28-28 tie.

Chael Sonnen still talking about everyone

Chael Sonnen has not had a good 2011. The former UFC middleweight contender was fined $10,000 and given two years probation on a money laundering charge. He was suspended by the UFC. In applying to the Nevada State Athletic Commission for a fight license after he failed a drug test in California, he ticked off Keith Kizer, the head of the NSAC, which puts his chance of getting a license in jeopardy.

Has all this humbled Sonnen? Convinced him to quiet down and quit talking trash? Not a chance. On Monday’s MMA Hour on MMA Fighting, he didn’t mince words.

“I called them up and said, ‘Give me the worst guy you’ve got under contract,’” he said. “They said, ‘Chael, Wanderlei [Silva] won’t fight you.’ I said, ‘Alright. Give me the second worst guy you’ve got under contract?’ They said, ‘Chael, how many times do we have to tell you: [Mirko] Cro Cop’s a heavyweight.’ I said, ‘Alright, is there anybody available? How about Bisping? Is his dance card open? And then they said that might be a possibility. So that’s where we left off. But that’s just not my focus. My focus is making things right with director Kizer.”

Ah, there’s the Chael we know and tolerate. Ripping people he can’t possibly fight because of their fight obligations — Silva is facing Chris Leben at UFC 132 — or the fact that they outweigh Sonnen by at least 50 lbs.

Next, he rips light heavyweights for not calling out Jon Jones enough.

“The hot topic that everybody should be talking about is that he’s been the champion for three weeks and not one coward at 205 has challenged him. Not one guy has called him out and said, ‘I want to fight that guy.’ If you’re all scared of a 23-year-old kid, turn your gloves in, sign your pink slip and show yourself the door.”

That ignores the fact that most of the top light heavyweights have a fight in front of them, or just completed one. Of the MMA Weekly Top 10 205 lbers, three (Machida, Bader and Jackson) have fights in the next three months. Jones and Rua just fought, Dan Henderson isn’t in the UFC, Thiago Silva is suspended and Rashad Evans is already slated to fight Jones. That leaves Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, who just lost to Phil Davis, or Forrest Griffin.

Fine, Chael. Why hasn’t Griffin called out Jones? Perhaps it’s because he knew that Evans was already going to fight Jones and a “call out” would be a waste of breath?

That’s just Chael being Chael. But to put the rough start of 2011 behind him, Sonnen might consider how running his mouth got him into trouble with the NSAC. Albert Einstein said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Maybe it’s time for a change, Chael.

Forrest Griffin vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua II confirmed for UFC Rio in August [UPDATED]
By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

GriffinForrest_150_16_1.jpg
In keeping with the theme of rematches from year’s past at UFC Rio, GracieMag.com reports that Forrest Griffin and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua are expected to meet on the card.

Citing sources close to the UFC, the report states that the fight has gained steam in recent days and is expected to be finalized soon.

The two met in late 2007 in Rua’s UFC debut. Coming in after a lauded career in Pride, Rua was considered by many to be the #1 light heavyweight fighter in the world. Griffin, the Ultimate Fighter season one winner, was expected to be a tough challenge, but one that Rua would get through to get a shot at the UFC Champ.

However, Griffin shocked the world with a fairly one-sided fight, going into the third round ahead on the scorecards and finishing Shogun with a rear naked choke.

Since that fight, both fighters have captured and lost the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. Griffin has had a rougher road, losing to Rashad Evans and Anderson Silva in back-to-back fights, but he turned things around with a decision win over Tito Ortiz. He then picked up another decision win over Rich Franklin at UFC 126 in February after a 15-month injury layoff.

Shogun remained out of action after the loss to Griffin until January of 2009. After a rough win over Mark Coleman, Shogun knocked out Chuck Liddell to get a shot at then Champ Lyoto Machida. Their first but was one by Machida by a very controversial split decision, and in the rematch last year Shogun knocked him out to finally capture the UFC title.

However, in his first title defense, Shogun was battered and beaten by 23-year-old Jon Jones last month, losing by TKO in the third round.

UFC Rio will be headlined by the Middleweight Championship bout between Anderson Silva and the last man to hold a win over him, Yushin Okami. It takes place from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 27.

Penick’s Analysis: I love this fight. Forrest had to get out some of the ring rust in the fight with Franklin, but if he’s able to get back into the cage without a lengthy layoff here, this should be a very good fight. I don’t know what Shogun we’re going to see, because part of the loss to Jones was that he was simply made to look really bad. That came because of Jones’ ten-second-in flying knee to the jaw, and Shogun wasn’t the same from then on. With Forrest’s win over Shogun having been continually altered with revisionist history saying he beat a “lesser” Shogun, this will be an opportunity for him to pull it off again. For Shogun, it’s a loss he can attempt to avenge. It’s really a great rematch, and one I think we would have possibly seen for a title eventually had Jones not been called upon earlier than expected. But really, in front of the Brazilian fans, this will be another really good fight for the card, and it vaults the winner right into the thick of things at the top of this crazy 205 lb. division.

UPDATE: UFC President Dana White has confirmed the fight for the UFC Rio card in comments made to MMAFighting.com.

BELLATOR 41 RESULTS: Warren takes controversial decision, Freire and Strauss advance to featherweight tourney finals
By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Logo_Bellator_150_279.jpg
Bellator 41 took place on Saturday night in the Arizona heat outdoors at the Cocopah Resort and Casino in Yuma, Ariz., and in the night’s main event, Bellator Featherweight Champion Joe Warren once again needed a comeback victory, though this time he was helped by the judges.

Taking on Marcos Galvao, Warren was most assuredly down two rounds to none heading into the third round, where he took Galvao down and worked effectively enough to take the final frame. But after getting numerous takedowns stuffed and taking a high level of blows from Galvao in their 137 lb. catchweight “superfight,” it looked like Warren would lose for the first time in the Bellator cage.

The judges had something else to say about that, handing down scores of 30-27, 29-28, and 29-28, all in favor of the Champion.

The night’s other non-title “superfight” saw Bellator Bantamweight Champion Zack Makovsky earn the first knockout win of his career over Chad Robichaux. Both fighters were looking for submissions early and often, but in the third round, Makovsky took Robichaux out with a series of strikes.

The season four Bellator Featherweight Tournament finals are now set, and for the second time Patricio “Pitbull” Freire has advanced to the finals of a Bellator tournament. In a rematch of the season two featherweight tournament semifinals, Freire took on Wilson Reis. After two fairly even rounds, Freire and Reis began trading punches in the third. That was a mistake for Reis, as Freire battered him with pinpoint strikes, finally knocking him out with a vicious combination against the cage.

A third stoppage on the card saw Daniel Strauss lock on a fight-ending guillotine choke on Kenny Foster in the third round of their fight, sending Strauss to the finals to meet Freire. Their season four finals bout will take place later this season.

Alessio Sakara blames hype for Maiquel Falcao’s hate, welcomes future UFC fight
UFC middleweight Alessio Sakara was as surprised as anyone to hear that Maiquel Falcao found him to be “disrespectful.”

After all, the Italian striker believes he’s always been as respectful as possible to all of his past and future opponents.

That said, Sakara isn’t averse to settling his differences with the Brazilian slugger in the cage. “Legionarius” has Jorge Rivera first, but after that, Falcao is welcome to step up to the plate.
